Dancing Ardi

In the middle of crowded and the most advanced city in Indonesia, there was a boy. He had a big passion about traditional dance. He knew all kind of traditional dance from Indonesia. Nothing could stop this boy from dancing. He had minor taste of music; unlike his friends, his friends like modern music and dance. He was a high school student, and he was a senior in a traditional dance class. He loved to dance Reog Ponorogo.
“Hey Ardi! Its time for us to go to the canteen? Aren’t you hungry or something? My stomach can’t stand no more and I can eat a horse” Said Agung, Ardi’s friend.
“Just wait a minute, I’m trying to finish this dance.” Said Ardi.
Yes! His name is Ardi. He doesn’t think anything but dance, dance and dance. He doesn’t think about when raining, or cloudy or storm. He dance, dance and dance. Dancing is his soul. In fact, his friend thought he would keep dancing after the end of the day.
            10 Minutes later…
            “Done!” Ardi shouted.
“Should we go to the canteen now? Hurry up, I’m starving to death you know…” Agung bagged.
On the way to the canteen, Ardi heard a music. Suddenly, he looked for that music came.
“Hi, what kind music is this? It makes me want to dance. By the way, I’m Ardi.” Said Ardi.
“It’s dubstep. I’m Roy!” answered Roy.
If Ardi heard a music, any music, he suddenly without a reason started to dance. So, he danced! Don’t know what he danced but he believed those are the modern dance. He didn’t know modern dance so well, all he knew was traditional dance. So, don’t be surprised if that dance is not quite good.
The song ended, he shown up his favorite song and started the song from the cassette player. The song started, and he started to dance Reog, AGAIN! His eyes showed us his soul, his passion about Reog. He danced about 15 minutes, and his friends only looked at him and didn’t say a word. Suddenly..
“Stop this music!”, Roy shouted suddenly.
“I admit your modern dance is good.. A little bit good, but… Your second dance is terrifying! I can’t stand it anymore!” Said Roy.
“Well, it seems you don’t like traditional dance. But, why you hate our dance?” Ardi Asked.
“There is so many cool song out there, but why traditional?” Roy replied.
“But this is our heritage…” Said Ardi.
“Forget that heritage!! What about a competition and the audience will decide it who will be the winner? And, the loser must obey what the winner said. And it takes place in my father event. Do you dare to accept it?”
“A competition? Alright! I accept!” Ardi agreed and shaked Roy’s hand.
Ardi decided to accept the challenge Roy gave, and he practiced about a month. Even when he was in the shower, he still practiced. And when he was in school, he still didn’t focus and just thought the competition.
In fact, Ardi scared of losing. Ardi would be embarrassed, and his friends would also mock him. But he tried not to be scared.  He stayed strong and still eager to face his challenger, Roy. He also wanted to show how important to kept Indonesian heritage. He did it for Indonesia.
“Why are you so serious about this challenge, Ardi?”, Agung asked.
“I want to show him that traditional dance must be remembered and not be forgotten. We are Indonesian, we must keep our heritage!”,said Ardi.
“You are right, but you will be embarrassed if you don’t win.”, said Agung.
“Indonesian should be embarrassed if this heritage gone. I don’t care about myself, I care about Indonesia, I want my child and grandchild know what our heritage are.”, Ardi replied.
Agung stayed quiet and his head nodded that showed he was agreed about what Ardi said.
The day came. Ardi was ready than ever. He put his dancing clothe to his backpack. He asked his parents blessing. He walked to the decided place.
“You will lose, Ardi. There is so many famous dancers here.”, said Roy looked down on Ardi
“When you started to be an oracle? Hahaha… Don’t be cocky, let just see. You will be embarrassed”, Ardi answered with his believe that he would do the best.
Roy left with his annoyed face. Ardi went to the backstage because the show would be started 15 minutes until the performance. Roy performed first, so Ardi can learn about the battlefield.
After 15 minutes, Roy performed. Ardi saw Roy’s movements and it was so good and smooth. Because of his movements, he attracted almost all the audiences. Ardi can sense the Roy’s charm because his amazing movements.
It’s time to Ardi’s turn. Ardi performed Reog Ponorogo dance. He danced with pride which didn’t care for the winning or losing. He only cared about how to make the audiences smile and he wanted to show how beautiful and gorgeous our traditional dancing is.
The dancing has finished in 7 minutes and it was the seven minutes of pride. Ardi stared at the audiences and saw his fellow’s friends in the back row. Everyone didn’t realized that the performance has ended. Ardi stooped his body. Suddenly, everyone gave an amazing applause to Ardi.

Finally, the all the performances finished, all those two performances got on the stage. The MC told the audiences to vote by giving applause. Ardi seems a little nervous because he had a little bit mistaken in his dancing. Roy seems confident, like he knew he was the winner. Ardi’s heart beat fast, he was worried. Then, the MC asked the audiences.
“Where is the sound of Roy?!”, The MC asked the audiences to give applause. Everyone gave a loud applause to Roy. Yet, Roy became more confident about his self that he would be the winner.
“See, you might lose Ardi. Just wait it…”Roy Mocked.
“Don’t be too confident about yourself, Roy...” Ardi whispered.
“And now, where is the sound for Ardi..?!”, The MC asked the audience again. Everyone gave applause to Ardi louder than Roy. Roy’s face was shrunken, he thought he would lose. Ardi’s face seems happy. But he didn’t want to be cocky about it. He just wanted to wait the MC said whose the winner is.
“Alright! I think we have decided the winner..”, the MC said and suddenly, everyone was quite and impatient to hear the winner of the competition.
“And the winner goes to…”
“Poor me, I might lose.. “ Roy said in his mind.
“Goes too… Ardi!!! Let’s give him a big and louder applause again for him!”, the MC finally decided whose the winner is. Ardi went to the stage and everyone gave a big applause for him.
“Thank you, thank you..” Before he finished his speech, Roy ran away from the stage suddenly. Ardi didn’t know what to do. He was worried that he would go ran after him or he would continue his speech. Then, he decided to continue.
“Thank you, I don’t know what to say. But, I am proud of you because you rather choose Indonesian dance than modern dance. As we know, our heritage is dissolving. Why? because many Indonesian choose modern then traditional. We have to save our heritage and keep it!” Ardi seems confident about it, and the audience sensed the passion of Ardi about traditional dance.
Later that day, there was something different between Ardi and Roy. Roys seems upset because he lost his own competition. He knew each other but they acted like they never knew, like a stranger. One day, as always Ardi went to the canteen to fill his stomach. On the way to the canteen, he heard the music of Roy. He took a peek through the window, he saw Roy in the class. He felt guilty because he was embarrassed him. He went through the room and Roy seems to ignore Ardi.
“Hey Roy, what’s the matter with you? It’s just a competition.”, said Ardi, but Roy seems quite and didn’t answer Ardi’s question.
“Hey Roy, I’m talking to you..”
“What do you want? You beat me, and now I’m embarrassed. Ok, you can give an order. I will obey it..!”, answered Roy weakly.
“No, I don’t want it. I accepted your challenge because I can’t stand if you keep mocking our heritage. I want to keep our heritage, so I want to tell everybody about our great heritage. I want everyone keeps and conserves our heritage. That’s all!”, said Ardi.
“Uhm.. I guess you are right, and I’m wrong about it. I’m sorry Ardi. I’m embarrassed not to be a good Indonesian.”
“Yeah! We are Indonesian, and we are supposed to keep this great heritage from now. Who else will keep this heritage except us? Huh? Who? We are!!!”
Since then Ardi and Roy became best friends ever. They got along together, they mixed traditional and modern dance. Roy stopped mocking about the traditional dance at all. Roy realized how important to keep Indonesian heritage is. Who else will keep this heritage? They? No! Who? We! We will keep this great Indonesian heritage!!
The End…
